Although Bridge was still as energetic as ever, pursuing several different musical activities, there was thus a gradual shift in the balance he maintained between them; his declining interest in viola playing gave way to an increased interest in conducting. In addition, he was not as prolific as a composer as before. He found it harder to write the music he wanted, and in time even came to doubt his own creative ability. None the less, by the beginning of the 1920s his considerable reputation at home as a performer, conductor and composer was established.
