Goossens, Sir Eugene (1893-1962). English conductor and composer, pupil of Stanford. Conducted the first concert performance of The Rite of Spring in England. Permanent conductor of the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, 1931-46, and Director of the New South Wales Conservatorium, Sydney, Australia from 1947.

Grainger, Percy (1882-1961). Australian-born composer and pianist. Settled in England in 1901 before moving to America in 1914. His aim to create 'free music' led to radical experiments with melody, rhythm and timbre.

Grimson String Quartet. Formed in 1902. Jessie Grimson and Frank Bridge (violins), Ernest Tomlinson (viola) and Edward Mason (cello). Gave the last performance of the series of St James's Hall 'Pop' Concerts.

Hambourg, Mark (1879-1960). Russian-born pianist and pupil of Leschetizky in Vienna, who became a British citizen in 1896. The Hambourg family commissioned The Hambourg Quartet, a five-movement work by Bridge, Harty, J D Davies, Eric Coates and York Bowen, based on The Londonderry Air.

Harrison, Beatrice (1892-1965). English cellist, sister of May. Gave the first performance of Delius's Cello Sonata and recorded Elgar's Cello Concerto with the composer.

Harrison, May (1891-1959). English violinist, sister of Beatrice. Delius composed his Double Concerto for the sisters, and, for May, his Third Violin Sonata.

Hess, Dame Myra (1890-1965). English pianist, a distinguished interpreter of Bach, Mozart, Beethoven and Schumann. During the Second World War, founded a series of lunchtime concerts at the National Gallery, London.

Hindemith, Paul (1895-1963). Leading German composer of his generation, theorist, violist and conductor. Soloist in the first performance of Walton's Viola Concerto. Following Nazi disapproval of his music, he moved to America, becoming an American citizen in 1946 and teaching at Yale University.

Holbrooke, Joseph (1878-1958). English composer, pupil of Frederick Corder at the Royal Academy of Music, London. Large, uneven output, crowned by a trilogy of operas based on the Welsh epic, The Mabinogion.
