The flowers of Duranta erecta (syn. D. repens) are followed by yellow fruits, about a centimetre across, giving rise to one of the plant's names, Golden Dewdrop. Other names include Pigeon Berry and Sky Flower, and for the Brazilians, 'Violeteira'.

Although Ixora coccinea is a native of India and Sri Lanka, it is well-adapted to Brazil, being grown in borders or as hedges. Ixoras range in colour from red, through pink, orange and yellow to white.

This curious arrangement of each small white flower having one of its sepals greatly enlarged and in a contrasting colour provides Mussaenda erythrophylla with considerable fascination.
