Some species of Anthurium can be grown successfully as house plants in England, but in Brazil they flourish outdoors in borders or when grown epiphytically, secured to tree branches.
It is the three bracts that surround each tiny flower of the climber Bougainvillea, native to Brazil, that create such a spectacular effect en masse. Colours range from white, through yellow, red and orange to purple.
