FREE-LANCE ACTIVITES SINCE 1989

Since becoming a free-lance musician in 1989, my income has been generated from three main sources:

(i) Open University part-time employment.

  1. Acting as an Associate Lecturer in Wales for the music courses:
    • A241, Elements of Music (1990-3),
    • A214, Understanding Music (1994-9 (made redundant)),
    • A314, From Baroque to Romantic (1990-7),
    • AA302, From Composition to Performance: Musicians at Work (1998-2001 (made redundant));
    • I have also acted as an Associate Lecturer in the South-West Region for A314 (1993-7) and AA302 (1998-2000 (made redundant));

  2. Continuing as a postgraduate supervisor - students supervised:
    • David Beck: Conducting Stravinsky's Choral Music (BPhil, 198?)
    • Jackie Flowers: Swapping Aberystwyth for the Internationale (Rutland Boughton) (BPhil, 1990, declined)
    • John Warnaby: The Music of Peter Maxwell Davies based on the Writings of George Mackay Brown (PhD, 1991) (with T. Herbert)
    • David Huckvale: The Influence of Nineteenth-Century Romantic Music on Scores Commissioned by Hammer Films (PhD, 1992) (with R. Middleton and S. Spenser)
    • Frank Salter: An Examination of Certain Dramaturgical Devices in the Operas of Verdi up to 'La Traviata' (PhD, 1998) (with J. Barrie Jones)

  3. Acting as monitor and examiner, and contributing to further Open University courses (see Publications below).

(ii) Lecturing for Swansea University Adult and Continuing Education Department, with the following courses:

    • Schubert and Berlioz (1989-90)
    • Musical Nationalism (1990-1)
    • Mozart (Gower Festival, 1991)
    • Vienna: a Musical Capital (1991-2)
